Gaza Municipality said on Sunday that the shortage of specialist equipment and spare parts exacerbates the catastrophic conditions in the enclave and enables the spread of disease, the Palestinian Information Centre has reported.

“The Israeli occupation forces have destroyed 126 vehicles and machines, around 80 per cent of the council’s heavy equipment, which has aggravated the catastrophe that Gaza City is experiencing in various aspects of life,” said officials. The impact is being felt on the health sector, the environment, roads and water and sanitation services.

“The shortage of necessary vehicles and machinery and the lack of sufficient fuel and spare parts means that waste is accumulating in the streets, and makes the severe shortage of water and the leakage of sewage into the public domain even worse.”

The municipality called on international bodies and organisations to get specialist vehicles and machinery into Gaza, as well as spare parts, to enable the municipality to restore public services and alleviate the suffering of the residents, who have been languishing under the ongoing military offensive for more than nine months.
