A Turkish drone strike killed three people in northern Iraq today, Reuters reported Iraqi Kurdish security sources and a local official saying.

The sources said a vehicle was set on fire after a drone attack and three passengers were killed near Iraq’s northern province of Sulaimaniya.

The identities of the casualties were not immediately clear, said the sources.

Turkiye regularly carries out air strikes on sites it claims belong to PKK militants in northern Iraq and has dozens of outposts in Iraqi territory.

The PKK launched an insurgency against Ankara in 1984 with the initial aim of creating an independent Kurdish state. It is designated a terrorist organisation by Turkiye, the US and the EU.

In July, the Iraqi government issued a directive for state institutions to refer to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a “banned organisation” in official correspondence.

The following month, the judiciary ruled the dissolution of three political parties due to their alleged ties to the group.
