Syrian police have found the body of a two-year-old Syrian girl who had been beaten to death by her aunt and her husband and buried in a cemetery in Eastern Ghouta in the Damascus countryside, according to local news reports.

Ninar FM said the Syrian Criminal Security Branch received information about two unknown persons who visited the Sheikh Omar Cemetery at night in the village of Al-Buwaydah in Eastern Ghouta.

It added that after inspecting the cemetery, they located the body of the little girl buried at a depth of ten centimetres.

“Upon investigation, it was revealed that the body belonged to a two-year-old girl (Marah. A), who lived with her aunt named (Fatima. T) after her father had passed away.”

According to the radio station, during the investigation, her aunt and her husband – Mohammed. A – confessed to assaulting the child and beating her with a stick until she died and hiding her body in a refrigerator in their home for four days.

“The perpetrators asked two other accomplices to help them get rid of the body and they in turn transported her to the cemetery and buried her there in secret,” the report added.

One of the accomplices has since been arrested while the other remains at large.
