The UAE and India have signed a memorandum of understanding on the maintenance and operation of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi, which is now fully operational.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement yesterday that the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India signed a memorandum of understanding on the maintenance and operation of the plant, during the visit by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid Bin Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to New Delhi.

The Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported that “the agreements were announced within the UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).”

According to the agency, the two companies have partnered “to provide a formal framework to share knowledge and exchange expertise across all areas of nuclear energy development, highlighting the UAE’s leading nuclear capabilities, which are recognised by the International Atomic Energy Agency as a global benchmark for new nuclear nations worldwide.”

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) also signed a 15-year agreement to supply the IndianOil Corporation with liquefied natural gas (LNG), under which ADNOC will supply one million metric tonnes of gas annually, mainly from its lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project.

ADNOC also signed a strategic framework agreement with the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited to extend its current oil storage and management agreement and contribute to supporting India’s energy security.

A deal was also signed between the UAE and the Indian Ministry of Food Industries to develop a food and agriculture park in the Indian state of Gujarat, using the latest advanced and innovative technologies in the food industry sector.

Last Thursday, the UAE announced the completion of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first of its kind in the Arab world.
