Renowned director Roland Emmerich is set to take on one of cinema’s most revered classics, Lawrence of Arabia, by reimagining it as a three-season television series, titled In Arabia. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich is calling it “In Arabia,” rather than “of Arabia,” because as he says, “it has a little bit more characters” than the original movie.

Known for blockbuster disaster films like Independence Day and 2012, the German filmmaker is reportedly aiming for a production budget that exceeds $100 million.

The original Lawrence of Arabia, directed by David Lean and released in 1962, is regarded as one of the most seminal films of the 20th century. Starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, and Omar Sharif, the film is famed for its stunning cinematography, epic narrative, and portrayal of British officer T.E. Lawrence’s pivotal role in the Arab Revolt during World War I. Clocking in at nearly four hours, the movie has been called the “epic to end all epics,” setting the bar high for Emmerich’s reinterpretation.

The series promises to revisit key historical moments from Lawrence’s perspective, focusing on his leadership in uniting Arab tribes against the Ottoman Empire.

Screenwriter Anthony McCarten, acclaimed for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody, is attached to pen the entire first season. The project is currently being shopped to major networks, with Emmerich describing it as a passion project that has been years in the making.
