The Israeli army announced on Friday the killing of two soldiers and the injuries of 24 others, including two seriously injured, following an attack by two drones launched from Iraq on northern Israel for the first time.

According to Israel’s Army Radio, this is the first time since the beginning of the war that factions in Iraq have succeeded in striking Israeli territory and causing deaths and injuries.

The Israeli army shared in a statement that Sergeant Daniel Aviv Haim Sofer, 19, and Corporal Tal Dror, 19, both from the Golani Brigade: “Were killed in battles in the north.”

It added that in the same incident, two soldiers from the Golani Brigade were seriously injured.

According to Army Radio, the investigation into the incident concluded that on Wednesday night, two drones were launched from Iraq, crossing into Israeli territory in the Golan Heights area.

It added: “The Air Force intercepted one drone, and the second exploded in an army camp in the northern Golan Heights. As a result of the collision, two soldiers were killed. Two other soldiers were seriously injured, one moderately injured, and 21 lightly injured.”

It admitted that it “failed to detect the exploding drone and also to issue a warning,” explaining that the foreign object (the drone) was not detected by the aerial detection systems, so no warning sirens were activated.

According to two separate statements by a group called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq issued on Telegram, its fighters carried out drone attacks on Israeli targets in the northern occupied territories, including the Golan Heights, on Wednesday and Friday.

In solidarity with Gaza, which has been facing an Israeli genocidal war since 7 October, 2023, the Houthis in Yemen, armed factions in Lebanon, most notably Hezbollah, and Iraq are carrying out various operations against Israel by targeting it with missiles and drones, in addition to targeting ships linked to Tel Aviv in the Red and Arabian Seas.

These factions state that their operations can be stopped by ending the war waged by Israel with US support in the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 138,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them women and children, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction.

According to the latest update of the Israeli army’s data, the number of its wounded since the start of the war on Gaza has reached 4,490, while the announced number of dead has reached 723 officers and soldiers.
