Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said yesterday that Athens has gradually reached a sufficient level of trust with Turkiye through open communication channels, Anadolu reported.
In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Gerapetritis highlighted that over the past 15 months of rapprochement, both countries have established a sufficient level of trust via open communication channels.
He added that he and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, had received instructions from both nation’s leaders to use the current circumstances to engage in comprehensive talks on the delimitation of the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone.
The Greek foreign minister emphasised that all issues related to this matter would be discussed during the Turkish foreign minister’s scheduled visit to Athens in November. He also pointed out that if both sides fail to reach an agreement within this framework, they will continue their efforts to maintain the positive climate in bilateral relations.
On 7 December 2023, Turkiye and Greece signed the “Athens Declaration on Friendly Relations and Good Neighbourhood” during a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Greek capital. The declaration outlined the two nations’ commitment to engaging in ongoing and constructive consultations on political dialogue, a positive agenda and confidence-building measures.
