Iranian officials revealed that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had directed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to develop several military plans to respond to any possible Israeli attack.
The officials told US media that the magnitude of the Iranian response would be proportional to the extent of the damage that Israel may inflict.
Two officials from the IRGC revealed that the plans under consideration include launching up to 1,000 ballistic missiles towards Israel if the Israeli strikes cause severe damage or significant human losses, according to Sputnik news agency.
The officials explained that if the Israeli attacks are limited to some military bases or weapons depots, Iran may not respond severely.
They stressed that if Israel targets oil infrastructure, energy facilities or nuclear sites, or if they assassinate Iranian leaders, it will inevitably lead to a harsh retaliation.
The officials added that options for response include escalating operations by pro-Iranian groups in the region and disrupting global energy supplies and shipping.
They also stressed that Iranian forces are on high alert, with air defences around military and nuclear sites being reinforced for the past several weeks in anticipation of any Israeli action.
