A senior government official in Kuwait has disclosed that a new law is being considered to address the situation of the Bidoon community, who are classed as being “illegal residents” of the country, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas reported on Saturday.
The source indicated that options under review for addressing the Bidoon issue include granting privileges, such as access to education, healthcare, employment and residency, to individuals who disclose their original nationality to the relevant authorities and formally request to regularise their status.
The source further noted that those who are unable to adjust their status would be supported through a government mechanism, which allows them to enjoy several benefits approved by authorities.
Once the law is enacted and necessary measures are taken, the designation of “resident with illegal status” will no longer exist.
The term Bidoon, or stateless, refers to a group of people residing in Kuwait without Kuwaiti citizenship, estimated to be around 100,000 individuals. The Kuwaiti government asserts that the majority of them hold Iraqi, Saudi, or Syrian citizenship, which they allegedly concealed to seek Kuwaiti nationality.
