Today’s societies cannot be seen as “civilised”, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, said yesterday, as they have become dominated by materialism and flourishing arms economies, fuelled by wars and conflicts that harm innocent children.
Speaking during a meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s envoy for development finance, Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, El-Tayeb voiced his regret at the lack of global justice and criticised the reluctance of some major nations to support developing countries.
Mohieldin hopes to work with Al-Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders to get more support from Arab and Islamic institutions for developing countries. This support is needed to help these countries with their development projects and internal challenges.
