Syria: Israel bombs military targets amid chaos

Israel bombed numerous weapons depots, government offices and intelligence sites across Syria amid the chaos of the fall of the Assad regime. As Syrian rebel leaders arrived in Damascus on Sunday 8 December, Israeli army chiefs were planning to hit Al-Mezzeh airbase in the capital and the Khalkhala airbase, close to Suwayda in the south. The strikes in central Damascus included the main customs offices, a nearby military intelligence depot and a scientific research centre. The strikes continued the following day, with hits on chemical weapons stores, which, according to Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, was to prevent them falling into the hands of 'hostile actors'.
