Daesh executed 54 members of the Syrian government forces as they tried to escape through the Homs desert in central Syria as the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad was falling, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported yesterday.
“ISIS [Daesh] cells executed 54 members of regime forces near Kaziya in Al-Sukhna area in Homs Desert,” the rights group said in a statement.
It added that Daesh cells detained soldiers who were fleeing Deir Ez-Zor.
Assad’s regime fell on Sunday following an offensive launched by armed factions identifying themselves as opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham under the command of Abu Mohammad Al-Julani.
Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, previously known as Jabhat Al-Nusra, severed ties with Al-Qaeda years ago. It was designated a terrorist organisation nine years ago through a United Nations Security Council initiative.
