Qatar announced today that it will reopen its embassy in Syria “soon”, following the fall of the Bashar Al-Assad regime.

The spokesman for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majed al-Ansari, said in an official statement: “the State of Qatar will reopen its embassy in the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic soon after completing the necessary arrangements.”

The step, he explained, “aims to strengthen the close historical fraternal relations between the two countries and their peoples” and Qatar’s “steadfast support” for Syrians ” who are striving to build their state on foundations of justice, peace, stability and prosperity.”

He pointed out that reopening the embassy “will enhance coordination with the relevant authorities to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid currently provided by the State of Qatar to the Syrian people via the air bridge.”

The Assad regime fell on Sunday after an attack launched by armed opposition factions led by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, ending the family’s rule that lasted for more than five decades.

Qatar, which provided support to the opposition factions that rose up against the Assad regime in 2011, remained a fierce critic of the regime’s president while calling for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. Doha, like other Gulf states, severed diplomatic relations with the Assad regime and closed its embassy in Damascus shortly after the revolution was launched.
