The Russian lower house state, Duma, has approved a bill paving the way for the removal of the Taliban Movement and other organisations from the list of terrorist organisations.
The bill was submitted to the Duma last month, allowing courts to temporarily suspend the ban on the activities of the organisations.
The bill will now be submitted to Russian President Vladimir Putin for approval after the end of the parliamentary process.
In 2003, the Russian Supreme Court included the Taliban Movement on the list of banned terrorist organisations.
However, in May, Russian presidential envoy to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, said the Russian ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs had proposed the Taliban’s removal from the list of banned terrorist organisations.
The Taliban returned to governance in Afghanistan in August 2021 after the withdrawal of western troops.
