Can Syria's Al-Jolani solve his Israel dilemma?

Syria's de-facto leader Mohammed Al-Jolani has a massive Israel problem on his hands. The response from Syria's new leaders to Israel's land grab in southern Syria and hundreds of air strikes across the country has been extremely muted. Al-Jolani's family was kicked out of the Golan Heights by Israel in 1967 - hence why he took the nom de guerre Al-Jolani, literally meaning 'from Golan' - and he credits the second Palestinian Intifada with being his political awakening. But after years leading global jihadist organisations linked to Al-Qaeda, he still sees his primary enemy as Iran and Hezbollah, putting him in direct opposition to the only armed resistance movement against Israel's genocide in Gaza and occupation of Palestine. While many Syrians are celebrating the demise of the 53-year Assad dynasty and starting to think about how to rebuild Syrian society in this new reality, they will soon have to confront their war-hungry neighbour to the west, who is violating their territory and causing untold destruction and death.
