Maltese-American cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco has called for an arrest warrant to be issued for US President Joe Biden over his relentless support for Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza.

“What is happening in Gaza is a genocide, a crime against humanity in which the United States is also involved, because it provides Israel with military and diplomatic cover, and participates in the daily killing through weapons manufactured in [the US],” Sacco told Haaretz. He added that Biden should be tried alongside Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Haaretz devoted much of its content on Wednesday to the humanitarian catastrophe inside the Gaza Strip. The callousness and hardness of heart are not limited to the Israeli government only, but rather characterise broad circles of Israelis who try to ignore the bleeding of the Gazans in various ways,” it said. While another year has passed, “Israel is still mired in a war that is exacting a heavy cost in lives and whose end still can’t be seen on the horizon. It is headed by cynical leaders whose hearts have been hardened to the value of life. And it has once again become clear that the recent talk about a hostage deal was nothing but talk.”

In an editorial headed “Israelis’ Only Wish for 2025 Should Be the End of the War and the Return of the Hostages”, the newspaper said that the only way to recover the kidnapped is to end the war, but warned that Netanyahu is not interested in ending it, and is thus abandoning 100 kidnapped Israelis in Gaza.

“There are tens of thousands of civilians killed, wounded and sick, and complete destruction in the northern Gaza Strip,” added Haaretz. “With the return of the harsh winter, people in Gaza are dying of cold, especially children.”
