Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan hosted his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi in Ankara today to discuss regional issues, including the genocide in Gaza and the situation in Syria, according to official statements.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Safadi led the visit that included Jordan’s Chief of Staff Major General Yousef Huneiti and Intelligence Department head Major General Ahmad Husni. The Turkish side was represented by National Defence Minister Yasar Guler and intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. The visit by Jordan’s top diplomat follows a meeting with Fidan in Aqaba last month; his last visit to Turkiye was in October last year.

According to Hurriyet, the talks, held in a 3+3 format, aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation in defence, counterterrorism and humanitarian efforts, with a particular focus on uninterrupted aid delivery to Gaza. Ankara reaffirmed its support for Amman’s role as custodian of Jerusalem’s holy sites and discussed potential steps for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The ministers also explored strategies for a political transition in neighbouring Syria, with a focus on supporting its stability and security under the interim government. Discussions included the “dignified return” of Syrian refugees to their homeland. At least 115,000 displaced Syrians living Turkiye, Jordan and Lebanon have returned to their homes since the ousting of former president Bashar Al-Assad on 8 December, according to UN figures.

Jordan and Turkiye have maintained regular consultations to strengthen ties. Their trade volume reached $1 billion in 2024, with both countries aiming to expand economic collaboration further.
