The Rabbi of an Israeli paratroop battalion, Meir Shuker, has made a special visit to the new sites where the 77th Armoured Battalion is stationed within Syria. According to Israeli journalist Dvir Amer on Channel 7, the rabbi’s mission was to repair a “Mezuzah”, a Jewish religious symbol that is fixed at the entrances of buildings to protect and sanctify them.

Amer published a photo of the rabbi on social media, claiming that it was taken in Syria. No official statements were issued by the Israeli occupation army regarding the incident.

The Israeli army infiltrated several areas in southern Syria following the ouster of President Bashar Al-Assad’s regime last month.

On Saturday, Israeli police arrested two citizens of the occupation state after they entered Syrian territory, according to Yedioth Ahronoth. “The police returned the Israelis who infiltrated the occupied Syrian territories and sent them for questioning,” said the newspaper. No details about the area in which they were arrested and the charges against them were provided.

Immediately after the overthrow of Assad on 8 December, Israel announced the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria and deployed its army in the demilitarised buffer zone in the Syrian Golan Heights, most of which it has occupied since 1967. The army deployed soldiers in Mount Hermon, then infiltrated the countryside of Daraa, in a move condemned by the UN and Arab countries.
