Germany announced that it intends to grant €1 million ($1.03 million) to support the UN’s International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) to investigate serious crimes committed in Syria during the rule of the ousted regime.

The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday that “investigating serious human rights violations in Syria remains crucial for the country’s reconciliation and new beginning.”

It also stated that Tobias Lindner, Germany’s Syria Coordinator and Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, met yesterday with IIIM head, Robert Pettit, “to discuss bolstering support for accountability efforts in Syria.”

The statement also noted that the IIIM has been collecting evidence of the brutal crimes committed in Syria since 2016, documenting it and preparing it for legal proceedings.

It stressed that Germany has supported the IIIM since its establishment.

The ministry also announced that it will provide €1 million soon to enhance the work of the international organisation.

On 8 December 2024, Syrian factions took control of the capital, Damascus, and other cities ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family control.
