The Ministry of Interior in the Syrian caretaker government yesterday announced that it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons as they were being transported into Lebanon through “illegal” crossings.
The General Security Directorate in the coastal province of Tartous said that “after coordination with the intelligence service in the province and through continuous following and monitoring, an attempt to smuggle weapons that were headed to Lebanon through illegal crossings was thwarted.”
It added in a statement posted on the Syrian Interior Ministry’s Facebook account that “weapons and missiles were confiscated before they entered Lebanese territory” from the Syrian side.
There are believed to be dozens of unofficial crossing points along the rugged 370-kilometre border between Syria and Lebanon, according to Reuters.
