Iraq plans to increase its electricity imports from neighbouring countries in preparation for the coming summer season.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasised the importance of “examining the potential to increase imported electricity through interconnection lines with neighbouring countries.” He also stressed the need to include readiness tasks for the summer season in the contracts of companies responsible for upgrading and executing transport and distribution networks, according to a statement by the government.

The prime minister said work on electricity projects should be conducted in three shifts to ensure their completion before summer. He also instructed the Ministry of Electricity to revoke contracts and terminate agreements with any company that delays implementation.

Since the 1990s, Iraq has faced significant challenges in electricity production and distribution due to wars that resulted in the near-total destruction of power generation, distribution and transmission facilities across the country.
