Ten Egyptian professional unions, led by the Journalists Syndicate, sent a letter to the US Embassy in Cairo to “protest and condemn” President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the forced displacement of Palestinians.

“As representatives of five million Egyptian professionals, we declare our absolute rejection of the displacement of Palestinian people,” signatories to the letter said, adding that Trump’s statement “represents a blatant and direct attack on the sovereignty and security of the entire Arab nation and a violation of international law.”

The letter, which was written in Arabic and English, stressed that any step towards displacing the Palestinians constitutes a “crime against humanity”, and that any support for such measures is “support for ethnic cleansing and a complete disregard for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.”

The unions affirmed their support for the Egyptian government’s rejection of any plan that undermines Palestinian sovereignty and their legitimate right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

They called on Trump to retract his speech and to end international and American collusion in support of Israel’s brutal occupation and aggression against the Palestinian people, stressing that regional stability relies on achieving a comprehensive and just solution to the Palestinian issue, by ending all forms of Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state.

Signatories to the statement included the unions of journalists, engineers, lawyers, doctors, actors, cinema professionals, dentists, veterinarians, applicators and commercial professionals.
