The Kremlin said yesterday that Russia wants to continue negotiations with Syria on many issues, including the fate of its military base in the city of Tartus.
Commenting on the visit of a Russian delegation to the Syrian capital, Damascus, last week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “during the talks, the two sides agreed to continue contacts” adding that “there are many issues to discuss”.
On 28 January, Russian President’s Special Envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, and Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Vershinin, visited Damascus, marking the first such trip by Russian officials to Syria since the ouster of the Bashar Al-Assad regime last December.
