Algeria has once again refused to accept the return of a deported Algerian national who was arrested in the French city of Nice for domestic violence, marking a setback for right-wing French Interior Minister Bruno Rottayau, French television CNews reported on Monday.

The Algerian citizen  is subject to an Obligation to Leave French Territory (OQTF) order and has been detained in the Alpes-Maritimes region.

A source close to the case told CNews that the Algerian authorities refused the individual’s identification documents “without giving any reasons.”

Earlier in January, Algeria refused to accept a social media influencer who had been deported by French authorities.

The head of France’s right-wing Republicans party, Eric Ciotti, slammed Algeria’s decision describing the incident as a “new scandal and a new humiliation”.

“Algeria mocks France every day, despises the French and mocks our institutions. When will the government finally decide to take the necessary measures? The French government’s passivity on this issue has turned into complicity,” he added.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently denounced the “harmful climate” between Algeria and France, stressing that the two countries must resume dialogue once French President Emmanuel Macron clearly expresses his desire to do so.

Amid escalating diplomatic tension between the two countries, the results of a poll conducted by the CSA Institute for CNewsEurope 1 radio and Le Journal du Dimanche showed that 81 per cent of respondents support the application of economic sanctions on Algeria until it accepts the return of its its citizens from France.
