The Ministry of Interior in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of northern Iraq has stated that the terrorist organisation PKK is attempting to undermine and destabilise security in the region.
In a statement issued yesterday regarding the ongoing protests in Sulaymaniyah, the ministry noted that some employees have been demonstrating in the city for several days. It affirmed that the legitimate demands of the employees remain a priority for the regional government.
Discussions between the KRG and Baghdad are ongoing to resolve the issue of employees’ salaries, it added, warning that foreign individuals, groups within Iraq and external entities are attempting to exploit public sector employees’ demands for their questionable purposes.
The statement added that “certain groups, illegal organisations and the PKK are exploiting this situation.”
“These entities seek to destabilise security across other areas of the Kurdistan Region. They are also exploiting the employees’ legitimate demands to serve their agendas.”
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the right to peaceful protest but warned that it would not tolerate any attempts to disrupt security or violate the law.
It further stressed that any unlawful actions would be addressed under existing legal procedures.
