Asma Al-Assad, wife of former Syrian regime President Bashar Al-Assad, took to X to declare that she has always remained silent on political matters and will continue to do so. “After a period of silence, it is time to start again. Hope and change do not stop, so let us start together,” she said, adding that “Syria, with all its beauty and rich history, remains in our hearts. We wish its people safety and prosperity, and may the joyful days return to every corner of its land.”

“Homeland is not just a place, but a feeling that resides in the heart no matter how far we are. Syria will always remain the most beautiful story,” she added.

“Life takes us on paths we did not plan, it teaches us, changes us, and opens doors for us that we never imagined. Every stage carries its lesson, and every change has a meaning. There are moments in life that never fade, etched in memory with all their details… Is it time to share them?”

The Assad regime, which ruled Syria for over 50 years fell in early December after a civil war that erupted in 2011. More than half a million Syrians were killed and over 11 millions were forced from their homes as Assad tried to hold on to power.

On 8 December, Russia revealed that it has allowed Al-Assad and his family to take refuge in the country.
