Syrians working in Silicon Valley in the US have expressed optimism about the future of their country and the role of the youth in rebuilding it, Anadolu has reported. They stressed the importance of investing in young minds in the technology field to advance Syria.

Several engineers made statements to the news agency on the sidelines of a technology conference in the Damascus. The technology sector is important, they said, as is the role of young people in the development and future of Syria, which was destroyed by the ousted Baath regime.

Mahmoud Al-Nahlawi, an artificial intelligence expert at Google, said that he was born in Damascus and migrated with his family to the US in 1969. He studied computer science at the University of Michigan. As well as Google, he has worked with Apple, Yahoo and a number of other companies.

Al-Nahlawi added that this was his first visit to Syria since 2011, and expressed his great joy in meeting young Syrians during the conference.

“I have attended many conferences before, but the Damascus conference was like an extended family reunion, everyone treated each other as if they were members of the same family that had not seen each other in a long time,” noted Al-Nahlawi. “We have a common dream of building the future of Syria.”

He said that young Syrians have a real desire to develop themselves. “If they are given the chance, they will be able to benefit themselves and their country.”
