Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed an advisor with ties to US President Donald Trump to lead the Israeli side in the negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Associated Press reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed official Israeli source.
Ron Dermer, who was born in the United States, has served as Minister of Strategic Affairs in Netanyahu’s government since 2022. According to AP, Dermer is widely considered to be the advisor closest to Netanyahu.
He previously served as Israel’s ambassador to United States and was active in the US Republican Party. Dermer still maintains close connections with the White House.
Described by AP as the “more difficult phase of the ceasefire”, the negotiations between Israel and Hamas on phase two have not started yet. The first phase is expected to end in early March.
