Sudan’s Public Prosecutor has filed criminal charges against Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti, commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), along with more than 200 of his fighters, the office announced on Friday.

The charges include undermining the constitutional order, waging war against the state, and participation in and complicity with these crimes, according to a statement by the Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities said the decision followed extensive investigations by the National Committee for Investigating Crimes and Violations of National and International Humanitarian Law, which had reviewed numerous reports filed against the accused.

The move marks one of the most serious legal actions to date against the RSF leadership, which has been locked in a brutal conflict with the Sudanese army since April 2023. The war erupted after months of tension over a plan to integrate the RSF into the regular army as part of a stalled transition to civilian rule.

While the RSF recently accepted a US-backed ceasefire proposal on humanitarian grounds, the army rejected the offer, saying it would instead mobilise popular support to continue fighting the paramilitary group, which controls much of Sudan’s western regions.

The conflict has triggered what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, displacing more than eight million people and leaving millions more at risk of famine amid a collapsing health system and widespread disease.
