Egypt’s Consumer Protection Agency announced on Wednesday the recall of Belkin Limited’s BoostCharge 20K power bank after the discovery of a serious battery defect posing a fire hazard.
The agency said the recall was initiated in coordination with the company after tests revealed a flaw in the device’s lithium-ion battery that could lead to overheating and ignition. Consumers were urged to stop using the product immediately, disconnect it from any power source, and store it in a safe, dry place away from flammable materials.
The agency added that Belkin is offering full refunds or replacement units, and encouraged users to contact authorized service centers without delay. It also warned against throwing the defective power banks into household trash or recycling bins to avoid potential accidents.
Belkin stated that the defect stems from a manufacturing error affecting the lithium-ion component, which may cause dangerous temperature spikes and, in extreme cases, fire or melting. The company said the flaw poses a “direct threat to user safety,” especially given the widespread daily reliance on portable chargers.
Egyptian authorities urged consumers to comply fully with the recall to prevent any incidents linked to the defective devices.
