The United Nations has issued a call to ensure its decisions on the Palestine question are not left on paper, after the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, said it is time to take decisive steps on a matter that has remained unresolved for decades.

Her statement came during a General Assembly session held on Tuesday under the item ‘Question of Palestine’.

Baerbock said the issue has been on the Assembly’s agenda almost since the UN was founded.

She added: “For 78 years, the Palestinian people have been denied their inalienable rights, particularly their right to self-determination. It is time to end this deadlock that has persisted for decades.”

She noted that Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed tens of thousands of civilians, most of them children and women.

She also said that the ongoing seizure of Palestinian land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem continues to undermine the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state.

Baerbock stressed that the Israeli–Palestinian conflict cannot be solved through illegal occupation, either de facto or legal annexation, or forced displacement. She emphasised that UN decisions set the framework for a two-state solution.
