The administration of US President Donald Trump has designated three branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Middle East as terrorist organisations and imposed sanctions on them and their members.
The Treasury and State Departments announced these measures on Tuesday against the Muslim Brotherhood branches in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt, which they said pose a threat to the United States and its interests.
The State Department designated the Lebanese branch a Foreign Terrorist Organisation, the most severe designation, making it a criminal offense to provide material support to the group. The Jordanian and Egyptian branches were added to the Treasury Department’s list of Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organisations for their support of Hamas.
