US President Donald Trump said that the United States is closely monitoring the situation in Iran and has a large fleet heading there.
He said the fleet could be used if necessary.
Trump’s remarks came after he appeared to ease his threats of military action last week, saying he had received assurances that no executions of protesters would be carried out by Tehran.
He also said that a 25 per cent tariff on any party dealing with Iran would come into force very soon.

Speaking about Ukraine, Trump said the war there does not affect the United States, adding that his efforts to stop it are aimed at saving lives and helping Europe.
On Venezuela, he claimed the situation in the Latin American country would become much better than at any time in the past.
Trump also criticised the United Nations, saying it has huge potential but has failed to live up to it.
In an interview with the US network NewsNation on Wednesday, Trump said he had issued very strict orders to completely destroy Iran and “wipe them off the face of the Earth” if it attempted to carry out threats to assassinate him.
