Hamas says the killing in the town of Tammun, south of Tubas, is a new stain on the record of the Palestinian Authority’s security forces, and that the Authority’s leadership bears full responsibility.

In a statement received on Sunday, the movement said the incident, which led to the death of the child Yazan Samara, the son of Samer Samara who is wanted by Israel, and left his sister with serious head injuries after direct gunfire was opened at the vehicle they were travelling in, shows the danger of what it described as repressive policies by the Authority’s forces. It said these forces are pursuing members of the public instead of protecting them, at a time when the Palestinian cause is facing what it called an unprecedented assault by Israel and settlers across the West Bank.

Hamas warned of the consequences of continuing what it described as this dangerous approach, saying it could harm national unity. It held the Palestinian Authority leadership fully responsible for the outcomes and impact of such incidents.

The movement also called for all those involved in the shooting to be held to account. It said the blood of the Palestinian people is a trust that cannot be shed under any justification.

Hamas further demanded the immediate release of all political detainees, an end to all forms of pursuit of Palestinians, and serious efforts to strengthen national unity and close ranks in the face of Israeli policies targeting the land, the people and holy sites.
