Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday offered amnesty to fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) if they lay down their arms.
The remarks were made during a graduation ceremony for a new group of officers at the Naval College in Omdurman, west of the capital, Khartoum, according to a statement from the Sovereign Council.
Burhan said the Sudanese army and people would continue fighting until the RSF was “defeated” and the country was “cleansed” of the group.
“We have no option but to continue the battle to its end, or for the enemy to surrender and be eliminated,” he said.
He renewed his offer of “amnesty for fighters who were misled”, adding: “The doors of repentance are open, and as Sudanese we hold on to the essential values needed to reunite the nation.”
Burhan also said the armed forces had no hostility towards any party that had taken up arms as a result of incitement or misleading information. He called on them to lay down their weapons and return, adding that anyone who chose to stand with the country would be welcomed.
