Mohammed al-Hindi, Deputy Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement, said the proposed Peace Council — officially known as the “Board of Peace” in Gaza — was “a theatrical show” that had failed to stop Israel from continuing what he described as a war of genocide in the enclave.

In press remarks on Tuesday, al-Hindi said the council, chaired by US President Donald Trump, had adopted what he called the Israeli occupation’s agenda and was concerned only with guaranteeing Israel’s security.

He added that statements by US Ambassador Mike Huckabee exposed what he described as Washington’s clear bias towards Israel.

Al-Hindi said it would have been more appropriate for the US administration to issue a clear condemnation and a direct apology over the ambassador’s remarks.

He argued that the Israeli occupation, not the weapons of the resistance, was the main cause of instability in the region. He also claimed that Israel had an interest in provoking a US war against Iran.

The “Peace Council” was established as part of efforts to reach a political settlement in the Gaza Strip. Under an agreement between Israel and the Hamas movement, it is expected to assume responsibility for administering the territory.

However, reports indicate that the council’s mandate may be expanded to include preventing and resolving conflicts in other parts of the world.

So far, the council has reportedly raised around $5bn from its members. Negotiations are continuing over additional commitments from other countries, estimated at about $1bn per state.
