Lebanese soldiers in the south of the country came under fire on Tuesday, in what Israel described as a ‘warning’ aimed at stopping the establishment of a military post.

The Lebanese army said in a statement that the area around a new observation post near the southern border in Sarda–Marjeyoun “came under fire from the Israeli side, while an Israeli drone flew at low altitude and issued threats.”

The army added that it had ordered reinforcements to the post, instructed troops to remain in place, and to respond to the source of the fire. It did not provide details on whether the Israeli fire caused any damage or casualties.

The situation is being monitored in coordination with the committee overseeing the ceasefire agreement and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said in a statement that it had spotted “Lebanese soldiers attempting to set up a military post in an uncoordinated manner” near Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

It said: “Our forces issued warning calls, then used coordination channels to request a halt to the activity. After no response, warning fire was used to stop the work.”

Israel has killed more than 4,000 people and injured around 17,000 in its attacks on Lebanon, which began in October 2023 and escalated into full-scale war in September 2024.
