Egypt has formally designated several senior figures from the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists on a “permanent and definitive” basis, following final court rulings, authorities announced.

The Office for Regulating Terrorist Entities and Terrorists said the decision applies to Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, Mahmoud Ezzat Ibrahim and Moaz Mansour El-Sharkawy, among others, in line with Egypt’s Terrorist Entities Law.

According to the statement, the designation follows final and unappealable judicial verdicts convicting the individuals in cases related to their activities.

Aboul Fotouh and Ezzat are currently serving 15-year prison sentences, handed down in May 2022, after being convicted on charges including leading an organisation established in violation of the law and spreading false news deemed harmful to national security.

The latest decision also includes additional defendants in the same case, with the designation extended until 2031 in accordance with legal timeframes.
