American media reports say an Iranian strike on a military base in Saudi Arabia caused heavy damage to a US early warning aircraft and injured American personnel.

According to NBC News, citing US officials, the specialised early warning aircraft — an E-3 Sentry — was damaged during Friday’s attack on a facility about 80 miles south-east of Riyadh. The incident is described as one of the most significant strikes on sensitive US military assets in the region.

Experts said targeting this type of aircraft could affect the US military’s ability to detect threats and manage air operations. It also raises questions about Washington’s readiness for a prolonged conflict, as attacks increase and pressure grows on US military infrastructure in the Middle East.

The E-3 Sentry is one of the most important early warning and airborne command platforms in the US arsenal. It acts as a flying command and control centre, capable of detecting and tracking air and sea targets at ranges of more than 375 kilometres, and coordinating combat operations in real time.

The aircraft is equipped with an advanced radar mounted above its fuselage, allowing it to monitor airspace comprehensively and manage air battles. It can also direct fighter jets and air defence systems in various weather conditions, and operate for extended periods — up to 24 hours with aerial refuelling.
