A Palestinian official has said that passing an Israeli law allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners amounts to “legalising genocide” against the Palestinian people.
Raed Abu Al-Humus, head of Palestinian prisoners’ affairs, said the approval of such a law reflects what he described as the true nature of the occupying state. He added that Palestinians are still living under occupation and continue to pay the price for their struggle to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Speaking in an interview on Egypt’s Extra News TV channel, he said the law is more than a legal measure, describing it as part of a wider, systematic policy targeting prisoners.
He added that 89 detainees have died in Israeli prisons from torture since 7 October, calling it a “silent genocide” taking place behind bars.
He added that restrictions on family visits remain in place, and that international organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), have been prevented from fully accessing detainees.
