Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has dismissed Sudan’s Chief of Staff, Mohamed Osman al-Hussein, and appointed Yasser al-Atta as his successor, according to official statements issued Thursday.
The Sudanese army confirmed that al-Hussein was relieved of his duties and retired effective April 2, noting that the decision was formalised through a presidential decree.
Al-Hussein had held the position since July 2019, following his appointment by Burhan after the political transition that followed the ouster of former president Omar al-Bashir.
In a separate announcement, the army said a new General Staff formation had been established under the leadership of al-Atta. It also confirmed the appointment of Abdel Khair Abdullah Nasser Darjam as Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration.
Al-Atta, 64, has been a member of the Sovereignty Council since August 2019 and was part of the military leadership that took power following Bashir’s removal earlier that year.
The reshuffle comes amid ongoing political and military tensions in Sudan, where the armed forces remain a central actor in the country’s power structure.
