The Lebanese government has declared Thursday a national day of mourning for victims of Israeli air strikes that hit several areas across the country, killing hundreds of civilians.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in a statement issued on Wednesday that all public administrations, institutions and municipalities will be closed.

Flags will be flown at half-mast, while regular programming on radio and television stations will be adjusted in line with the national tragedy.

Salam added: “We extend our deepest condolences to the Lebanese people, especially to the families of the martyrs, and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded. We are continuing contacts with our Arab brothers and international officials to mobilise all of Lebanon’s political and diplomatic efforts to stop the Israeli killing machine.”
