Sudanese man dies after walking 65 kilometres for help in Libyan desert

A Sudanese man has died after reportedly walking approximately 65 kilometres through the Libyan desert near Kufra in an attempt to seek help after the vehicle he was travelling in broke down, according to informed local sources.

The sources said the man became stranded in the desert when the vehicle stopped unexpectedly. Faced with remaining in a remote area without water or shelter, he reportedly decided to walk in search of a paved road or passing motorists who could assist him.

According to the sources, the man died before reaching help as a result of the extreme heat and harsh desert conditions. Rescue teams later recovered his body.

The incident highlights the dangers faced by travellers and migrants using the remote desert routes linking Sudan and Libya.

The crossing is widely regarded as one of the region’s most hazardous because of its vast distances, difficult terrain, extreme temperatures, and the limited availability of emergency services, fuel and water stations, and communications infrastructure.

The incident has renewed calls from local observers for improved emergency response capabilities, support centres along desert routes, and greater awareness of the risks associated with travelling through remote areas without adequate safety preparations.
