Palestine welcomes Ireland’s ban on Israeli settlement goods, urges others to follow

Palestine has welcomed Ireland’s decision to ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling on countries and parliaments around the world to adopt similar measures.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on Sunday that it welcomed Ireland’s law banning the import of goods produced in what it described as illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The ministry said it welcomed “the Republic of Ireland’s adoption of the law banning the import of goods from illegal Israeli settlements established on occupied Palestinian land”, following its signing by the President of Ireland and the completion of all constitutional procedures required for it to enter into force.

The Irish law came into force after it was signed by President Catherine Connolly on 23 July 2026. It had previously been approved by the lower house of parliament on 7 July and by the senate on 15 July.

The legislation is based on the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion issued in July 2024, which found that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories is unlawful. The court also called on states not to recognise the situation created by the occupation or provide support that helps maintain it, including economic activities linked to Israeli settlements.
