Dozens of Syrians protest in front of parliament over rise in fuel prices

June 20, 2016 at 3:13 pm

Dozens of protesters staged a sit-in in front of the Syrian parliament’s headquarters in central Damascus to protest a decision by the government to increase fuel prices by up to 40 per cent.

The Sky News Arabia channel said on Sunday that the protestors carried banners that read “No to corruption!” and “No to rising prices, people are starving to death”.

The protesters called on the parliament to cancel the decision to raise fuel prices and to hold accountable those who led the state to adopt the decision.

A statement issued by the protestors stated that the sit-in will continue on a daily basis until the decision is reversed.

The Syrian government issued a decision last Thursday to increase the price of gasoline by 40 per cent per litter, diesel by 33 per cent and cooking gas cylinders by 38 per cent.

Syrian websites known for being close to the opposition considered the demonstrations as a “farce” through which the regime is allegedly trying to appear as a democratic regime that allows people to freely express their opinion.
