The Irish government has urged Dublin city to drop plans to rename a park currently named after a former Israeli president, a move described by local Jewish leaders and the Israeli government as “antisemitism”.
A city committee proposed changing the name of Herzog Park, named after Chaim Hertzog, the sixth president of Israel who was born in Ireland, to Hind Rajab Park.
The small park is located near the city’s only Jewish school.
The committee did not explain its reasons, while Ireland has been among the most critical European countries of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over the war in Gaza, which left more than 70,000 Palestinians dead and 170,000 injured, most of them women and children.
According to a document seen by the French news agency (AFP), the proposal is expected to be put to a vote in the city council. The city government has not responded to requests for comment.
Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee said in a statement: “This name change should not proceed and I urge Dublin city councillors to vote against it.”
