The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has strongly rejected the US Treasury Department’s decision to classify the group as a “terrorist organisation.”
In a statement, the group said the decision “is not based on any credible legal evidence.” It added that it will take all legal measures to halt the enforcement of the decision, to protect its rights and those of its members.
The Brotherhood warned that the move could have wider consequences. It said some authoritarian governments might use it as an excuse to crack down further on political opponents and civil society activists. It also suggested that extremist groups could exploit the decision to promote Islamophobic propaganda and incite hostility against Muslims in the West.
The statement described the Muslim Brotherhood as a moderate Islamic movement that inspires millions of Muslims worldwide. It added that the Brotherhood in Egypt, is a social and political movement, and such measures will not stop it from continuing its civil, social, political, and religious activities.
The group also called on human rights organisations and civil society in the United States, as well as the American public in general, to reject hate speech against Islam and to promote dialogue, cooperation, and compassion, values emphasised by all religions and by the Qur’an.
