King Mohammed VI of Morocco said on Thursday that nothing can harm the unity between African peoples, and that the continent’s bonds will remain stronger than any attempts to disrupt them.

The statement, issued by the royal palace, came in the context of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026, with 24 national teams taking part.

The King said: “Nothing can harm the closeness that has been built over centuries between our African peoples, nor the fruitful cooperation among the continent’s countries, which continues to grow through ever more ambitious partnerships.”

He added: “This edition of the tournament will remain a landmark in the history of continental competition. Beyond its sporting achievements, it has also highlighted the significant progress Morocco has made on the path of development, thanks to a long-term vision and a unique and effective Moroccan model that puts citizens at the heart of every ambition.”

King Mohammed VI noted that the “major continental football event” hosted by Morocco was marred by unfortunate incidents during the final minutes of the championship match between Morocco and Senegal, describing them as “shameful acts and behaviour.”

He said: “Once passions and emotions calm down, the bonds of African brotherhood will naturally prevail. Morocco’s success is, in fact, a success for all of Africa.”
