Israeli forces turned parts of East Jerusalem, including Old City and Damascus Gate, into a militarized zone on Saturday, setting up checkpoints during Holy Saturday observances at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing local sources, said the Israeli forces set up checkpoints on roads leading to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City, limiting access for Holy Saturday services.

They also checked the IDs of some young men and barred them from entering.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem urged Christians on Friday to attend Holy Saturday services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Israeli officials had previously closed the church for 40 days, citing alleged security concerns amid regional tensions.

Holy Saturday, observed by Eastern churches, precedes Easter and is a major event in the Christian liturgical calendar.
