Islamic resistance in Iraq threatens to target US interests if conflict with Iran escalates

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq said on Monday that it had not carried out any attacks against US military bases in Iraq or elsewhere in the region in recent days, while warning that it would become directly involved in the conflict if the United States expanded its military operations against Iran.

In a statement, the group said it would enter the conflict “directly” if the United States continued what it described as its aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The statement added that, in such a scenario, the group would target “all American interests and bases” in Iraq and across the region.

Separately, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday that a US service member had been killed in northern Iraq.

According to CENTCOM, the soldier was killed on 18^th July during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from what it described as an Iranian one-way attack drone. The command said a second US service member sustained minor injuries and was receiving medical treatment.

CENTCOM also announced the deaths of two US soldiers and the disappearance of a third following what it described as an Iranian attack in Jordan on 17^th July.

The command said US forces later recovered unidentified human remains at the site and that identification procedures were still underway.

Iran had not publicly commented on the US military’s statement at the time of reporting.
